The terminology used to describe the actions of the the herbs



Abortifacient- produces abortion.

Apoptogenic- helps lower the effect of unhealthy stress

Alteratives- referred has blood purifiers, help promote health in the cells

Analgesic- relieves pain

Anaphrodisiac- Helps increase the Lobito 

Anesthetic helps dull the senses of pain 

Antacid -Herbs that help neutralize excess acid in the stomach

Antibacterial - destroys or restrains bacterial growth

Anti-catarrhal-helps the body to remove excess mucous from the body 

Antidote- herbs that act against poison

Antiemetic- herbs effective against vomiting and nausea

Anti-fungal- destroying fungi or inhibiting their growth

Antigalactic- herbs that reduce the mild secretion 

Anthelmintic- destroys parasites

Antihypnotic- counteracting sleep; preventing sleep

Anti-inflammatory- reduces inflammation

Antimicrobial- herbs that help prevent/destroy or resist the growth of pathogenic micro-organisms 

Anti-rheumatic- helps ease inflammation in muscles and joints 

Antiseptic- a topical substance that kills germs and harmful bacteria 

Antispasmodic-prevents or reduces cramps and muscle spasms

Aperient- A gentle laxative effect 

Aphrodisiac- arouses and increases sexual desire

Aromatic- a fragrant, i.e., peppermint is an aromatic 

Astringent-tightens tissue (Latin name meaning to bind fast.) 

Bitter- herbs that have a bitter taste that helps stimulate the digestion system through our taste buds

Calmative- relaxing, calming the nerves

Cardiac- herbs for the heart/tonics 

Carminative- herbal remedies that aid in relieving/preventing flatulence

Cathartic- herbs that help accelerate bowel movement 

Cholagogue-Herbs that help stimulate the production of bile

Demulcent-Rich in mucilage, soothing and healing to the mucus membrane

Diaphoretic-Herbs that promote sweating

Disinfectant-herbs that destroy bacteria help against infections 

Diuretics- herbs that increase the flow of urine

Emetic-causes vomiting

Emmenagogue herbs that help promote menstruation flow 

Emollients-Herbs that soften and are soothing when applied externally to the skin 

Expectorants-Herbs that help expel excess mucus from the respiratory system

Febrifuge- herbs used to reduce fever

Galactagogue- increases the secretion of milk in nursing mother’s

Hepatic- herbs that aid in the liver and increase the bile flow 

Hypnotic- Herbs that prompt sleep

Laxatives- promote gentle bowel movement 

Mucilage- Herbs with a jelly-like element and soothe and protect irritated tissue. 

Nervine- Herbs that calm, strengthen and tone the nervous system

Nutritive- healthy herbs that are high in nutritional value

Pectorals- healing and strengthening effect on the respiratory system.

Purgative- powerful laxative

Relaxant-helps relieve tension 

Restorative- a healing tonic that has the power to restore normal function and liveliness.

Rubefacients- When applied to the skin, the herbs stimulate circulation and local irritation.

Sedatives reduce stress and nervous disorder, sleep, and induce calmness. 

Stimulants-Increase the physiological energy of the body

Styptics- reduce or stop bleeding 

Sudorific- helps promote sweating

Tonic- herbs that strengthen, nourish and increase the tone and viable function of the body system

Toxin- poisonous

Vermifuge- expels and eradicates worms 

Vulnerary- herbs that help in healing wounds
